Robert Stuart Trail 1812 — 1813

Day 33: September 13th, 2007 Grand Island — Omaha

The breakfast recommendation for today is Tommy’s, a nice Family Restaurant. The bacon turns out to be cut very thin, but beside that the breakfast is really okay. After breakfast I drive over to the next gas station.

Around a quarter past ten I depart. Unfortunately, I am not able to find the post office. So I start my journey for today and hope to find one tomorrow in Omaha.

Also today I am traveling a lot on backroads and smaller highways.

The weather is very nice, whereas it is not very warm with temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees.

On backroads I follow the South Platte River banks. The country is absolutely flat with occasionally some smaller hills.

At Morse Bluff I leave the river banks and follow a trail over the country to shortcut a river bend, just like Stuart did.

On backroads I reach Ashland and cross the South Platte River.

Because Omaha lies to the northeast, I leave my trail at the Interstate and drive to Omaha. Tomorrow I return here to reach the confluence of the South Platte River with the Missouri River. Already at a quarter to five I arrive at the Motel 6 — which is not closed due to a power outage like last year.

I ask for directions to the Outback Steakhouse. But the employee at the reception is not really familiar with the area around here. So she immediately calls the steakhouse and asks for directions. Unfortunately she is not able to help me out with a post office around here. I say thank you and put my stuff into the room. Then I check my video taping and enter the next GPS coordinates.

Finally I drive over to the Outback Steakhouse, which I find without issues this time, not like last year where I got lost. While driving, I also pass a Wal–Mart, which I visit after my dinner. I need some DV tapes and because the canopy in my truck is slowly falling on my head, I look for some adhesive spray. Back at my car I try the glue. But it does not really work as expected. But at least, the canopy sticks up a bit.

Because I stay tomorrow night in Downtown Kansas City, I make a room reservation at the Holiday Inn Express. This motel is in walking distance to my friend Johanna, which I plan to visit. Unfortunately the 800–number does not work from my room. So I must dial the fee number directly from my motel. The reservation process is a bit weird. But I hope that it will work out anyways. After that I do my usual bookkeeping and my diary before I go to bed.
